William Woods University Undergraduate Catalog - 2004

The Honors Program at William Woods University consists of three types of courses:

- Honors Core classes are taken during the freshman year. Each semester three thematically-linked courses will be offered for Honors credit. Incoming Honors students are to take all three unless they have already received credit for them from another institution. The intent behind these courses is to build a learning community among the Honors students which will sustain and foster an appreciation for the life of the mind. THESE COURSES WILL BE OPEN ONLY TO HONORS STUDENT.

- Sophomore-level courses will be of two types. In the fall, we will offer HUM2xx-H: Toward a Life of service. This is a serving-learning course that will combine a community service project with an exploration of the philosophies of community service. In the spring, an Honors interdisciplinary course (HUM 200-H) will be offered. Topics and instructors will vary from year to year as we invite course proposals from the faculty for this course. SOPHOMORE-LEVEL COURSES WILL BE OPEN TO NON-HONORS STUDENTS WITH THE INSTRUCTOR'S PERMISSION, BUT THE COURSE WORK WILL BE THE SAME FOR ALL STUDENTS.

- Enhanced Honors courses will allow students to receive Honors credit for a course not typically offered by the Honors program. They will be able to individually tailor a course in an area of interest to them. It will also give them another opportunity to meet the credit hour requirements of the program should they be bringing in a number of transfer or dual-enrollment credits. Students must complete the necessary paperwork prior to registration. A STUDENT MAY ENHANCE ONLY ONE COURSE FOR HONORS CREDIT DURING THEIR COURSE OF STUDY AT WILLIAM WOODS.

To graduate with an Honors diploma, students will need to complete 24 hours of Honors courses as well as present a thesis or similar project to the campus community.
