Biology encompasses a very wide variety of disciplines and career possibilities: human and animal health care; wildlife biology and conservation; cell, micro, and molecular biology—each with a myriad of career opportunities.
The biology program at William Woods University is benefited by small class size, biological retreats, availability of a field station, a biology club and a national honorary Beta Beta Beta Chapter. Portfolios, annual interviews and professional development play key roles in the biology curriculum. Students are encouraged to gain practical experience through internships and other related programs.
The biology department at WWU provides three majors:
B.A. Biology Degree. This versatile degree prepares students for advanced degree programs such as Medical or Veterinary school, Pharm. D. programs, Physical Therapy, Nursing, or graduate school leading to a Master’s or Ph.D. in a variety of fields of the biological sciences. It is also appropriate for students who intend to enter the work force immediately after graduation.
B.S. Biology Degree with a concentration in Equestrian Studies. This degree is specifically for students who want to go to Vet School, who want to work with large animals, and who love horses. It allows students to take the courses that best prepare them for Vet School and still take a number of appropriate Equestrian Science classes, including riding.
B.S. Degree in Biology Education. This degree prepares students for teaching at the secondary school level and meets the State of Missouri’s Certification requirements. Lecture/discussion and laboratory or field classes provide a wealth of material for classroom teaching, as does observation and supervised student teaching in actual secondary school classrooms.
Biology Education B.S.
Biology Certification Total Hours: 40
Bachelor of Science degree grades 9-12 certification
Students who plan to teach biology in grades 9-12 in Missouri complete these major requirements and those of the Secondary Certification Program.
