BASIC DEGREE REQUIREMENTS
IN SOCIAL WORK
The Council on Social Work Education nationally accredits this baccalaureate degree program. A degree in social work requires successful completion of a minimum of 122 credit hours. To be accepted into the program, students must maintain an accumulative GPA of 2.5. Transfer students from another accredited BSW program must complete 24 social work credit hours at WWU. To graduate with a BSW degree, students must receive a grade of C or better in all social work required courses.Under no circumstances are academic credits awarded in social work courses for life or work experiences. 
Required Common Studies Courses for Social Work Majors. To be admitted to the Social Work Program, a student must successfully complete the requirements listed below. Students who have not met these requirements will be considered provisional social work majors.
Course Requirements. The undergraduate curriculum structure is built upon the guidelines established by the Council on Social Work Education. A student is not eligible to test out of any social work course and academic credit will not be awarded for life or work experiences. Courses will be in areas such as Human Behavior and the Social Environment, Social Welfare Policy, Programs, and Services, Research, and Social Work Practice.
Field Education (Internship). In the Fall and Spring semesters of the senior year, each student completes an internship in a social service agency. Agency staff, Field Educators, who hold a MSW and/or BSW supervises the placement. While in placement, the student is also enrolled in a Field Education Seminar. The seminar facilitates the integration of field and classroom learning. To qualify for entry into the field, the student must have completed all required social work courses except those taken the senior year concurrently with Internship and must be accepted into the program.
Electives. Each major must successfully complete at least one (1) elective in social work, but are encouraged to take as many social work electives as possible. Social work electives are courses that focus on practice with either a special population and/or practice in a certain human service agency setting
