Online Sources for Reliable Facts and Statistics

General Facts

Encyclopaedia Britannica -- A library sponsored resource with over 73,000 articles, both short and long, on every subject.

World Almanac -- A library sponsored resource that includes biographies, encyclopedia entries, facts, statistics.

Dictionary -- The Merriam-Webster Dictionary.

Thesaurus -- Roget's II Thesaurus, 3rd edition.

Calculator -- Includes many different types of calculators.

Biography.com -- Biographies for over 25,000 famous people, both current and historical.

Nationmaster -- Compiles and presents statistics about nations from such sources as the CIA World Factbook, United Nations, World Health Organization, World Bank, World Resources Institute, UNESCO, UNICEF and OECD.

Statemaster -- Compile and presents statistics about the states from such sources as the US Census Bureau, FirstGov.gov, the FBI, Bureau of Justice, and various other governmental and non-profit organizations.

Quotations -- Bartlett's Familiar Quotations has over 11000 classic quotations. See also Simpson's Contemporary Quotations for more recent sources of quotes.

 

Government Produced Statistics

*The federal and state governments are often the primary source for statistics on many areas. Try these sites for some commonly used statistics.

Bureau of Justice -- Information about crime, prisons, capital punishment and more.

Bureau of Labor -- Statistics about wages, workplace safety, consumer spending, inflation, unemployment, occupations, and much more.

Population Statistics -- Facts from the Census Bureau about communities, cities, and people. Site also includes information about the economic census.

Fedstats -- A central location to access statistics produced by the agencies, etc of the federal government.

Missouri census -- Offers Missouri specific population data broken down by zip code, school district, metro areas and more.

Education Fast Facts -- The easiest way to access education facts and statistics such as graduation rates, literacy info, and much more. THe NCES site also has much more data if you need more.

Missouri School Data -- Access Missouri education facts by school district.

Health Stats -- Excellent source for health related information such as major causes of death, health care, and many diseases.

Transportation Stats -- Information on federal and state highway accidents and fatalities, vehicles per capita and more.

Missouri Economic Indicators -- Statistics about Missouri such as cost of living, average wages (by county), unemployment, gross domestic product, and more.
