(ST. LOUIS, Mo, Nov. 2) - The William Woods University women's soccer team finished the 2009 regular season with a 5-1 victory at American Midwest Conference foe Harris-Stowe State University on Monday afternoon. The Owls finish the regular season 4-13 overall, and 3-7 in the AMC.

 

WWU opened the first half by scoring three goals in the first eight minutes. Sophomore Melissa Roewe (O'Fallon, Ill.) scored in the second minute to give the Owls an early lead. WWU pushed the lead to two goals in the third minute on a goal from sophomore Anne Weaver (St. Charles, Mo.). In the eighth minute, freshman Stephanie Kirvan (Camdenton, Mo.) added another goal for the Owls to increase the lead to 3-0.

 

William Woods added another goal before the first half would end. Senior Kristen Phinney (Washington, Mo.) scored to give the Owls a 4-0 halftime lead.

 

Harris-Stowe would find the back of the net in the 54th minute. Courtney York scored on a corner kick to cut the WWU lead to 4-1.

 

Weaver would answer the Harris-Stowe goal in the 73rd minute. Weaver scored on an assist from freshman Rachel Rutter (Columbia, Mo.). Weaver now has seven goals on the year.

 

The Owls recorded 23 shots on the afternoon, including 18 shots on goal. Harris-Stowe had four shots in the loss; two on goal. Freshman Anna Hatfield (Desoto, Ill.) had a save for the Owls in the win.

 

The Owls will return to action on November 6th in the American Midwest Conference postseason tournament. The site, and opponent, is to be determined.
