Sarah Rowland of Kansas City, Mo., was named an Honorary Alumnus during WWU’s Alumni Weekend April 20-22. Honorary alumni are individuals who are not alumni of the university, but are selected for membership in the association in recognition of their distinguished personal achievement and outstanding community service. Sarah Rowland breeds and raises American Saddlebred horses, which she has ridden since growing up in Moberly, Mo. Last fall, she and her husband, Landon, were the major donors for the new Rowland Applied Riding Arena, which was built on campus.

The arena was not the first contribution she and her husband had made to the WWU equestrian program. Together they created an endowed scholarship called the Gayle S. Lampe Equestrian Achievement Award. Although she was born and raised in mid-Missouri, Rowland was educated at Smith College, from which she received a bachelor of arts in English literature.

Her extra curricular interests were centered on writing, music and dance. She continues those interests today, serving as a trustee of the Nelson Atkins Museum of Art and the Kansas City Symphony.

Rowland is a past director of the American Royal Association and past chair of the horse shows, and she has served on the visiting committee for the equestrian program at William Woods.
