Monday, February 16, 2009 -6:30 PM- Memories of a Movement: Interview of George Farris - George Farris, a relative of the late Martin Luther King, has been an eyewitness to history. Farris will talk about the turbulent 60s, the struggle for justice and equality and his personal reflections on the Civil Rights Movement and Martin Luther King. Thursday, February 19, 2009 -4 PM- Road Trip for Justice - National speaker Bess Klassen Landis will discuss the rape and murder of her mother and why she is still a proponent of nonviolent alternatives to the death penalty. Come listen in as WWU Trustee Charlie James shares with us important life lessons and tells stories about his time playing football with the Missouri Tigers and professional baseball with the St. Louis Cardinals. Thursday, February 26, 2009 -4 PM- African-Americans in Missouri History - The KC Monarchs and Negro League Baseball - Viewing and discussion of documentary about the KC Monarchs one of the most successful Negro League Baseball teams of the early 20th Century; an era in which African-Americans were excluded from Major League Baseball. We will also consider the history of the African-American community in KC, and its role as a cultural and community hub of African-American life in the greater Midwest.
