Haupt Receives Helen Stephens Award at WWU

Mason Haupt, a junior math major and physics minor at William Woods Mason HauptUniversity, is this year’s recipient of the Helen Stephens Award. He is the son of Dennis and Jodi Haupt of Jefferson City, Mo. He is the first male student-athlete to receive the award.
 
This award is presented annually to an outstanding junior athlete who has achieved excellence both in the classroom and intercollegiate athletics. The student must demonstrate the discipline, desire and talent that best describes the legacy of Olympic Gold Medalist and William Woods alumna, Helen Stephens.
 
A member of the Owls baseball team, Haupt boasts a career .340 batting average and has been one of the primary catchers for the past two seasons.
 
 Over the past three years, Haupt has battled three significant injuries. For head baseball coach, Darren Munns, that is part of the reason he was nominated.
 
“After each injury, Mason has persevered. He has worked hard to rehabilitate himself and come back.  He has also proven himself to be a model student athlete and someone who is respected on the team,” Munns said.
 
As a freshman, Haupt was named Academic All-AMC. The following season, in 2008, he was again named Academic All-AMC. He finished the season with a .339 batting average, five doubles, 13 RBI’s and was third on the team for stolen bases.
 
Unable to play this season from a torn ACL, Haupt was again named Academic All-AMC.
 
Off the field, Haupt holds the strength and conditioning squat record of 610 lbs. and is top five in many other lifting categories.
