William Woods Plans First Art Show of the New Year

The first art exhibit of the new year at William Woods University will be “Paintings and Works on Paper” by Garry Noland, an artist from Independence, Mo. His artwork will be displayed in the Mildred Cox Gallery of the Gladys Woods Kemper Center for the Arts Jan. 13 to Feb. 9.

A gallery talk will be held Jan. 15 in the Cox Gallery from 3 to 4 p.m., followed by a reception from 4 to 6 p.m.

Most of Noland’s artwork involves landscape and he often paints over pages from National Geographic magazine. He either cuts into the surface of the magazine to arrive at a photograph on the inside or he inserts a photo (usually from Life and Look magazines). He then paints on the image, continuing it out to resemble the original, arriving at a facsimile of the “original truthful” content.

Noland has a B.A. in art history from the University of Missouri-Kansas City and wrote art criticism for several publications before concentrating on painting. In addition to Missouri, he has exhibited in Massachusetts, New York, Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Tennessee, Indiana, Texas, California and Alaska.
