Emily Hopkins of Silex, Mo., was the recipient of a $1,000 MasterCard Scholarship from Missouri Colleges Fund (MCF) during her senior year at William Woods University. Hopkins graduated recently with a degree in elementary education.

Raised in a rural farming town, Hopkins comes from a blended family. After her father passed away, her mother remarried. Each had three children and a new family of eight came together. The blended family in which Hopkins grew shaped her personality and outlook on life. She strives to live every day to the fullest and appreciate the small things in life.

Hopkins’ parents’ careers led her to her career choice. With a farmer for a father, Hopkins learned the value of hard work and being part of a team at a young age. She learned quickly how to work with others and how to be cooperative. But Hopkins’ mother’s dedication and love she has shown for her career is the reason why Hopkins choice education as her major.

“I always knew that I wanted a career in a helping profession,” Hopkins said. “I love working and interacting with people. I considered a career in the medical field as well as education. I chose education because I value the impact that a teacher has in a child’s life. Everyone can look back on their education and name a few teachers who greatly impacted their life in a positive way. I aspire to be that teacher in someone’s life.”

Now that she has graduated, Hopkins plans to take the early childhood PRAXIS exam so that she will also be able to teach younger children. She also plans to obtain a master’s degree in education.
