Katherine Wortmann of Mexico, Mo., was recognized for her campus involvement during the Co-Curricular Honors Banquet at William Woods University April 24.
Wortmann, who will graduate May 11 with a major in American Sign Language interpreting, received the Amy Shelton McNutt Award. The McNutt Award is given to the graduate whose consistency of purpose and selfless devotion to service were contributed without thought of reward and who best exemplifies the spirit and qualities of Amy Shelton McNutt, an alumna of William Woods in whose honor the award was named.
The Outstanding Senior award also went to Wortmann. The Outstanding Student Awards are the only awards at William Woods University bestowed on students by the nomination and vote of other students. Nominees must demonstrate academic achievement, campus and community involvement and leadership.
In addition, Wortmann was one of 14 William Woods University students named to the 2013 edition of “Who’s Who among Students in American Universities and Colleges” based on being an outstanding campus leader. A campus nominating committee and editors of the annual directory choose the students based on academic achievement, service to the community, leadership in extracurricular activities and potential for continued success.
By being listed in “Who’s Who,” she joins an elite group of students from more than 2,300 institutions of higher learning in all 50 states. Outstanding students have been honored in the annual directory since it was first published in 1934.
Wortmann has been extensively involved on the WWU campus. She has been president or chair of President’s Twenty, Student Alumni Council, Kindness Connection, Hands Up Club for ASL interpreting majors, Order of Omega Greek honor society, Omicron Delta Kappa leadership honorary and Alpha Mu Gamma foreign language honor society.
She also has been vice president and secretary of Multicultural Affairs Club, vice president of Alpha Chi Omega sorority, a contributing writer/photographer for The Talon online student newspaper and The Hoot student feature magazine and a member of Alpha Chi Honor Society, University Ambassadors, Student Assembly, Knowing the Woods and Campus Activities Board.
