H1N1 Influenza Updates

We all have been affected by a new type of flu: H1N1 influenza (aka swine flu.) As of Mid November, several students each week are diagnosed with 'influenza like illness' here at William Woods University. These cases are most likely H1N1, although they have not been definitively diagnosed. All WWU community members are encouraged take measures to prevent the spread of influenza on our campus.

Seasonal Influenza Vaccine and H1N1Influenza Vaccine are available at Health Services for students, faculty and staff while supplies last.

Call 592-4222 to check on availabilty and to schedule an appointment. Both vaccines are provided to students at no charge.

It is recommended that members of the William Woods University community receive both the Seasonal Influenza Vaccine and the H1N1 Influenza Vaccine.

Even if you believe that you have already had influenza this fall, receiving the vaccines may help prevent further illness this winter. If many people at WWU choose to get the vaccine, the Illnesses will not spread so readily from person to person. Thus, your choice to be vaccinated not only protects you from illness; it is also a way to protect your friends and loved ones.

The Flu and You

How to avoid getting and spreading the flu

  • Wash hands frequently
  • Avoid touching mouth, nose & eyes
  • Cover cough  & sneeze
  • Avoid close contact with sick people
  • If you are ill, do not go into public places
  • Get seasonal and H1N1 influenza vaccines

What are the symptoms of the flu?

Symptoms include fever, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, body aches, headache, chills, and fatigue. Those diagnosed with H1N1 flu have also reported diarrhea and vomiting.  As these are symptoms that are shared with a variety of upper respiratory illnesses, it is best to consult with a health care provider. WWU students may call Health Services at 592-4222 and request an appointment with Loree Monroe, nurse practitioner. After an evaluation, she will order lab studies or prescribe an appropriate medication if indicated.

Self Care recommendations for flu-like symptoms

For fever and aches and pains, take acetaminophen or ibuprofen every four to six hours.  Drink plenty of fluids. Stay away from others while feverish. Rest if tired. If cough is bothersome, use a humidifier, and try cough drops or hard candy. Take medication with Guaifenesin to loosen cough and medication with Dextromethorphan to stop cough. Don’t smoke.  Cough into your sleeves. Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth. Wash hands frequently.
