Personnel, Procedures & Reporting
The university employs a Director of Safety who reports to the Dean of Student Life. The university also contracts with Allied Barton Security to provide personnel services. Training is a joint venture between Allied Barton, William Woods University, and the State Department of Public Safety.
William Woods University Safety and Security Officers have the authority to ask persons for identification and to determine whether individuals have lawful business at William Woods University. William Woods University Security Officers have the authority to issue parking and moving violation tickets, which are billed to financial accounts of student, faculty and staff. Safety and Security Officers do not possess arrest power. Criminal incidents are referred to local police who have jurisdiction on the campus. The Safety and Security Office at William Woods University maintains a highly professional working relationship with the Fulton Police Department. All crime victims and witnesses are strongly encouraged to report any crime to the campus Safety and Security Office and the appropriate police agency in an accurate and timely manner. Prompt reporting will assure timely warning notices on campus and timely disclosure of crime statistics. Safety concerns and emergencies should also be reported to the Safety and Security Office.
Safety personnel follow a prescribed set of post orders agreed upon by Allied Barton and the university. These procedures include making regular rounds of campus property and facilities to check for unlocked doors, open windows, and other safety concerns. In addition, safety personnel report daily to the maintenance staff any lights that are not functioning, and or any other dangerous condition.
The safety office is located in the McNutt Campus Center. Safety personnel provide coverage 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and can be reached by calling ext. 4357 (HELP). From off campus the number is 57.592.4357.
To Report A Crime:
To report crimes, contact the Department of Campus Safety and Security or the Director of Residential Life. If it is an emergency, call 911 for the Fulton Police Department. If the crime or incident is of a nature that privacy is important to you, you may report directly to the Dean of Student Life.
If you are the victim of a crime or a witness and do not want to pursue action within the University system or the local police agency, you are encouraged to consider a confidential report. The purpose of a confidential report is to comply with your wish to keep the matter confidential while taking steps to ensure the safety of yourself and others. Reports filed in this manner are counted and disclosed in the annual crime statistics for William Woods University.
Upon contact or notification of safety incidents or campus emergencies, safety personnel investigate situations and contact appropriate support services such as the local police, fire department, ambulance services, and/or campus maintenance staff for assistance. "Incident reports” that outline the issues and identify individuals involved are written. Copies of all reports are provided to the administrative department responsible for safety. In addition, maintenance work requests are submitted for situations identified as as a threat to students, employees and/or campus visitors.
In any event creating a danger to the Campus Community or a threat of immanent danger, a warning will be issued by student e-mail; or, if the threat is of an immediate danger, it will be reported by posting a warning in the residence halls by the Department of Safety and Security.
